Schmier Concert: Black Thread Ensemble

Sunday, June 29, 2025 3 Tammuz 5785

4:00 PM - 5:00 PMTemple Israel

Black Thread Ensemble (BTE) is a dynamic contemporary classical ensemble that weaves together diverse musical traditions, blending contemporary classical music with the rich sounds of Eastern European Jewish music (klezmer and Yiddish song), jazz, and global influences. Under the direction of percussionist and composer Dr. Lorry Black, BTE features a mix of instrumentation, including a wide array of percussion, accordion, and other musical friends, creating a rich and textured sound.

With a spirit of innovation and collaboration, the ensemble reimagines old melodies through bold new arrangements while also premiering entirely new compositions. By fusing tradition with modern expression, BTE forges connections between past and present, breathing new life into timeless sounds and pushing the boundaries of contemporary music.

Lorry Black

Dr. Lorry Black is a dynamic percussionist, composer, arts presenter, and Jewish music specialist whose work seamlessly blends performance, scholarship, and community engagement. A sought-after musician in both Jewish and secular circles, he has performed under legendary conductors such as John Williams, Alan Silvestri, David Newman, and James Conlon, in addition to recording for a diverse range of artists. As an arranger, conductor, and performer, he brings deep passion and expertise to klezmer and synagogue music.

Committed to expanding the reach and impact of Jewish music, Dr. Black played a pivotal role as Associate Director of the UCLA Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience for 6 years, where he developed and led numerous groundbreaking programs. He served as Artistic Director for the 2020 UCLA American Jewish Music Festival and helped launch the Secret Chord Concerts, a Jewish music series now flourishing through the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History. In 2022, he took the stage as a performer and presenter at the Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto, where he contributed to the production of a Yiddish opera and showcased his artistry as a mallet percussionist.

His research delves into music in the French concentration camps, contemporary synagogue music, and the often-overlooked role of mallet percussion in klezmer traditions. As an educator and arts presenter, Dr. Black continues to redefine Jewish musical experiences, infusing tradition with innovation to captivate audiences worldwide.

Beyond his musical endeavors, Dr. Black finds joy in reading, fishing, and exploring the great outdoors—all alongside his wonderful wife, Nicole, and their daughter, Betty.
