4:00 PM - 5:00 PMFacebook, YouTube & Temple Israel Streaming Page

Shalva is a National Israel Center providing innovative and groundbreaking services, therapies and life changing programs for a thousand children every day. Shalva has been recognized by the Israeli government for its excellent welfare and educational services. Shalva received numerous awards, and has become an international leader in research, innovation and services for people with disabilities. Its message of inclusion is embraced far beyond the borders of Israel, and in 2018 Shalva was awarded consultative status by the United Nations.

The Shalva Band was formed thirteen years ago by Shai Ben Shushan, after a severe hand grenade injury left him with long term disabilities. "I never forget the times when I needed help with the simplest daily tasks", Shai says, "and I never forget the pleasure in overcoming the challenges involved in working with people with disabilities. To me, the Band is a living proof of abilities, talents and dreams realized."

Having captured Israel’s hearts and becoming a household name, the Shalva Band was invited to represent the best side of Israel during a special performance at the Eurovision second semi-finals. Their performance brought the international audience to their feet with roaring applause. The band’s inspiring messages of inclusion, representation of the human spirit, and talented music won them media buzz and numerous invitations to perform around the world.

Temple is so proud to present the Shalva Band in a custom recorded concert tailored for our community. Music was Stephen’s passion and he loved sharing it. Had this gifted soul had more time in this world, his parents are sure he would have become a professional musician, and shared his creative spirit with so many. Sadly, the husband and father of three passed away in 2008. It is through Stephen’s love of music that his parents, Harold and Sarah Gottlieb, have established an endowment at Temple Israel to create two Cantorial Chairs and an annual concert bearing their son’s name. Stephen’s passion and the Shalva Band’s mission are in such beautiful sympathy and resonance. It fills our hearts with pride that Shalva’s first appearance in Michigan will be at this year’s Stephen Gottlieb Concert.
