We have selected “Dying to Be Competent,” as our excerpt essay for topic and discussion. This essay tackles the American health care system from a statistical and personal perspective and is the book's centerpiece.
Thick: And Other Essays, by Tressie McMillan Cottom, is a collection of essays "about how American culture treats black women". McMillan Cottom centers her personal experience as a Southern Black public intellectual and writes on topics such as the loss of a child, sexual abuse, body image, and beauty politics.
