People of the Book is a 2008 historical novel by Geraldine Brooks that follows the journey of the real Sarajevo Haggadah, a medieval Jewish illuminated manuscript, through centuries of exile and war. The story centers on Hanna Heath, a rare-book expert who, while restoring the book in 1996 Sarajevo, discovers artifacts in its binding that unlock its history, leading her through a series of interconnected stories of its past owners, from 15th-century Spain to Nazi-occupied Europe. The novel explores themes of cultural exchange, religious persecution, and the resilience of art and humanity.
Geraldine Brooks is a best-selling, Pulitzer Prize winning author. This discussion of the Sarajevo Haggadah is sure to get you enthused about upcoming Pesach celebrations.
