Cantor Michael Smolash arrived at Temple Israel after serving for seven years as Chazzan Sheini at Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto. He created WJEW: the first twenty-four hour synagogue internet radio station, which is run by teens at Temple Israel, with listeners in over twenty countries. As well, he co-produced "Kavanat Haruach" - a CD of Temple Israel's Kabbalat Shabbat music, which was featured on Ruach 5769, the URJ's annual YFTI album. Michael was honored to lead Friday night services at the Union for Reform Judaism’s Biennial Convention in 2009 in Toronto - the largest gathering of Jews in North America. On the concert stage, Cantor Smolash is a sought after artist both for new commissions and gala musical events. His Yiddish Theatre show A Bis'l Zun has earned rave reviews from the Jewish press, and is available on DVD. In addition, Michael has had an active stage career (ACTRA/Equity member). His starring roles include Sparky in Forever Plaid, Billy Lawlor in Forty Second Street, Matt in The Fantasticks, and most recently, The Producers in Toronto, where he covered the lead role of Leo Bloom. Foremost and finally, Cantor Smolash loves parenthood with his wife, Jen Green, and two children Ayla and Cedar. Jen is a Naturopathic Doctor, published researcher, and dancer. Ayla and Cedar spend their time being seriously cute.
